After writing down the possibilities for this year's 10 best indie albums, I had two dozen to choose from, and then it hit me what a good year 2009 was for independent musicians.

Now that we're a few weeks into 2009, I've had time to reflect on the music of 2008. Here, in my opinion, are the albums that really stood out last year. (For what I think were the worst offerings of 2008, visit the Pulse section at www.wvflipside.com.)

The fates are smiling on Rockin' the Knox, the big outdoor concert on the grounds of Albright-Knox Art Gallery tonight. The move from September to June has brought better weather. And the decision to go for younger, alternative artists has been hailed by everyone who thought this show should be artier and more cutting- edge. Headliner is singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright, whose musical reference points run from Shakespeare to Judy Garland to his parents -- singer-songwriters Loudon Wainwright III and the late Kate McGarrigle, subject of his most recent album, "All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu." On Microcastle, the latest effort from Atlanta-based art rockers Deerhunter, the band finally succeeds at what it hinted at achieving on its groundbreaking last album, Cryptograms. That is, Deerhunter, the self-proclaimed ambient punk band, has become a pop band. The band spent much of the startlingly beautiful Cryptograms dabbling in swirling textures and avant-garde noise collages. The album was a surprising success with the indie crowd and was greatly loved by elitist indie media outfit Pitchfork, earning its coveted Best New Music recommendation and landing the song Spring Hall Convert on the sites much-loved Infinite Mixtape. Along with admiration from Pitchfork, the bizarre antics of primary vocalist, bandleader, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Bradford Cox gained the band mu...

Theater: Pretty girls, ugly story
A family torn apart by fate and war reach out for reunion and recovery in "A Shayna Maidel" (which translates as "a pretty girl" from Yiddish) at Little Lake Theatre in North Strabane.
