Space shuttle Atlantis is scheduled to land at Cape Canaveral today. It marks the end of an era, but we hope not the end of America's vigorous investment in science and space exploration. In some ways, the shuttle program never lived up to expectations. When the first shuttle launched three decades ago, it did so with the promise that space flight would become common. The grandest dreamers foresaw commercial jaunts for civilians with regular departures. Those things never materialized.
