One of the botanical expeditions I have dreamed about at some length would take me to Madeira and the Canary Islands. These islands are situated in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of North Africa. They are home to many plants that are observed in Valley gardens and others that would be suitable for growth in our corner of the globe.
As property owners complain about waves washing away pricey beachfront property, lawmakers may allow jetties to be built along North Carolina's barrier islands instead of allowing nature to shape the beaches. The Senate environment committee on Tuesday recommended a bill that would allow construction of jetties - solid structures that stick out into the water - at the edge of coastal inlets, the gaps between barrier islands that connect the Atlantic Ocean to the state's sounds. The jetties are intended to collect sand and block currents that might otherwise cut the corners off the edges of islands prized by developers and home buyers.

NEWSOMS - Howard Lee Ellis, 83, passed away Dec. 19, 2008. He was a son of the late Benjamin F. and Ethel Saunders Ellis and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Bradford Ellis. Mr. Ellis served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an aviation ordnanceman 2nd class stationed on the air craft carrier Ranger on the Atlantic ocean and served the Naval Air Station in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific.
