GRAPEVINE, Texas - Big 12 athletic directors discussed ways during their meeting Tuesday to stabilize their league before they can determine if and how much they might expand. Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard, the chairman of the Big 12 ADs, said there were "healthy discussions" about what might happen numbers-wise in the future.
When Will Isaacs became athletic director at Winfield High School, he knew he might have to put out a few fires, so to speak. But as he supervised his first paid-admission athletic event, a girls soccer doubleheader, he had no idea how literal that phrase could become. Charlie Voorhees has to fix the voicemail message. When you call for the Secaucus athletic department, the computer voice tells you you're being connected to Voorhees' office, but if he isn't there to answer, the voice you hear is Stan Fryczynski asking you to leave a message.
The athletic directors are new at Marshall and West Virginia but the rhetoric remains the same over whether a series should continue between the state's only Football Bowl Subdivision teams. Oliver Luck, who took over as WVU's athletic director last month, and Marshall's Mike Hamrick, himself on the job only a year, have held discussions over extending the series after the current seven- year contract expires in 2012.

Keynote speakers at Friday's annual meeting of the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association are ditching the podium for stools. In a departure from the typical legal speakers at prior meetings, the association's former executive director selected two key regional sports figures to address the local bar.
When it comes to sports at a high school, the athletic director runs the show. Or at least that's the way it's supposed to be. And when it comes to football, the head coach runs the show. At some schools, the athletic director and the head football coach are one and the same, so it's very clear what show is the featured attraction.
The state's high school athletic directors gathered in St. George this past weekend to discuss a number of issues facing administrators and coaches. As part of the 27th Annual UIAAA State Conference, Dr. Greg Dale, PHD in psychology and the sports psychologist for Duke University, spoke to the group about being effective leaders.
The Legislature is considering a bill that would force nearly every high school in West Virginia to hire an athletic director. The bill sets new standards for school athletic directors. It also requires every high school with 13 or more varsity sports to have a full-time athletic director. A school with 12 or fewer would have to hire a part-time director.
