The Pirates have fired their top two athletic trainers but will keep their coaching staff intact.
All of manager Clint Hurdle's assistants -- bench coach Jeff Banister, third base coach Nick Leyva, hitting coach Gregg Ritchie, bullpen coach Euclides Rojas, pitching coach Ray Searage, first base coach Luis Silverio and major league coach Mark Strittmatter -- will return for the 2012 season, a team source said. An announcement likely will come Monday.

Returning athletic director Lenny Roybal has opened up all of the fall sports head coaching positions at Espanola Valley High School in an effort to restructure the Sundevils' culture.

Joseph Tonelli, the former athletic director at Notre Dame-West Haven, and John O'Connor, the girls' swim coach at Branford, have been selected national high school athletic director and swim and diving coach of the year by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association.
Tonelli retired in June 2006 after spending 40 years in education and 30 years as Notre Dame athletic director. He began his career as a basketball and baseball coach before moving to administration.

WASHINGTON, June 1 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Grant Hammack of Georgia has been selected as the winner of the prestigious 2004 Special Olympics North America-National High School Athletic Coaches Association Coach of the Year Award.
This award is given annually to an active United States high school coach who is also an active Special Olympics coach for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Established in the late 1980s, this award recognizes an individual who has made tremendous impact on the local Special Olympics program, high school and community.

Canisius was picked to finish seventh in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference preseason coaches poll. The Griffs placed sixth. In that respect one might conclude the season went better than expected.
But why was a team with five seniors playing significant roles so lightly regarded in the first place? Given the Griffs' experience level, was there any satisfaction to be derived from a .500 record and another quarterfinal ouster from the MAAC Tournament? And is the program making acceptable progress as coach Tom Parrotta prepares for a sixth season at the helm?

IOWA CITY - The University of Iowa's renovations to Carver- Hawkeye Arena moved a step closer to completion last week as coaches and administrators moved their offices back into the facility.
Most Hawkeyes coaches and athletic staff members moved out of the building after the final home football game last fall and set up temporary shop in the Kinnick Stadium press box.
