Elmer McPhail, who earlier this year ran an age-group-winning time at the Boston Marathon, produced some more excellent results at the World Masters Athletic Championships held July 6-17 in Sacramento, Calif.
The WMA events were being held in the United States for the first time in 16 years and the weatherman helped out with some good running weather. McPhail, who is a teacher at Severna Park Middle School and an assistant coach at Severna Park High, was entered in both the 1,500- and 5,000-meter events in the 55-59 age group. For the 1,500 preliminary heats, he was first in his heat and third overall. In the final he was a most creditable fourth overall, running 4:26.27. The 5,000 meters was run in two sections and he won his section in 17:00.60, which placed him second overall to Keit...

Granada Hills Charter High School's triumphant Academic Decathlon team came home Monday morning to the kind of heroes' welcome usually inspired by athletic championships.
Two days after clinching the school's first U.S. Academic Decathlon championship in Charlotte, N.C., the nine-member team and its coaches marched onto campus between lines of Highlanders' cheerleaders and bagpipe players, and grinned with a mix of pride and embarrassment as students and educators applauded.
