We arrive at Monmouth Park Racetrack by way of a trip I took as a child to Ireland. I was 8 when my father brought my three brothers and me to a local horse-racing fair near his hometown in County Galway. My Uncle Martin handed each of us a 20-pound note, an eye-popping amount at that time.
Get out your fancy hat and good luck charms: The Rotary Club of SML's Nite at the Races leaves the starting gate Oct. 15 at the W.E. Skelton 4-H Conference and Educational Center in Wirtz. The fourth annual fundraiser, from 5:30 until 10 p.m., will include video horse racing, dinner, refreshments, door prizes, race winner prizes and women's hat parade contest. Tickets are $35 per person which entitles the purchaser to admittance, dinner, $16 in funny money with which to bet on any of the eight video races and opportunities to win door prizes. There will be a cash bar and guests are encouraged to bring appetizers for their table. Tickets are available at Westlake Radio Shack, Hot Shots Family Fun Center, Phil Hager Insurance Agency and the SML Chamber of Commerce.
CURRITUCK COUNTY | A "Night at the Races" fundraiser is being held to benefit the nonprofit Corolla Wild Horse Fund. The event will be from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Flying Dutchman in Corolla .

In the fall, tailgaters take to football. But in the spring, they pull out their silver candelabra, crystal table settings and best chafing dishes and go to the races - steeplechase races that is. The spring social season in Annapolis officially opens with the running of the Marlborough Hunt races held at Roedown farm in Davidsonville. This year's event was April 9. Following a steeplechase format, the horses scramble around a meadow, soar over jumps and wander through woods until one horse and rider come out first.
ARCADIA - Hundreds of people gathered for a day at the races Saturday in honor of the Ortega family, which lost nine members on Christmas Eve last year. The tribute and fundraiser at Santa Anita Park was organized by longtime friends of the Ortega family, Jerry and Jim Rocha.

POMONA - Spending - and out of school - is an idea Sandy Franco could grow accustomed to. Franco, 15, a sophomore at Nogales High School, spent Friday along with 29 other students at Fairplex in Pomona watching drag racing. More importantly, she also received advice from professional racers about the importance of education, setting goals and making positive decisions.
