By and large, candidates for six at-large seats on Charleston City Council back keeping the city's $2-a-week user fee. Ten of the 11 candidates for at-large seats discussed several issues, including the user fee and the redesign of Slack Plaza during a meeting with the Daily Mail editorial board Monday. Only incumbent Democrat Jerry Ware did not attend.
Outgunned by an 8-1 margin on the Evansville City Council, Republicans know a lot of things have to happen for them to gain control of the body in this year's elections. The field of three GOP nominees for at-large seats on the council will be chosen from among six candidates in the May 3 primary election.
PATERSON -- City police have released the videotape of a vicious machete attack in September at a chicken takeout on Straight Street and are asking for the public's help in capturing one suspect who remains at large. The surveillance video taken from the US Chicken Restaurant on the night of Sept. 10 shows three men involved in the brutal beating of a customer, repeatedly pummeling him with their fists and the blunt side of a machete. Three store employees witness the attack, but are apparently too frightened to do anything about it and remain behind a plexiglass-enclosed counter, the video shows.
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- The Mesa County Sheriff's Department said it will reconsider future business with a private prisoner- transport company whose employee apparently was outwitted at a Topeka gas station by a handcuffed and shackled man sitting in the back of a Buick. Dartanin Mitchell, 33, meanwhile, remained at large as of Friday night after escaping from custody Wednesday night.

The Buffalo School Board voted unanimously Wednesday to break with past practice and open the at-large vacancy to all qualified residents in the city. In the past, when an at-large board member has resigned, the board has appointed a district representative to the seat -- generally considered a step up -- and then appointed someone living in that district to the district seat.
NEW YORK (AP) - Iowa and Penn State ended their seasons eligible for an at-large BCS selection, and Oklahoma State and Virginia Tech are also in position to become eligible for big-money bowl bids. The top seven teams in the BCS standings released Sunday were unchanged from last week, with Florida, Alabama and Texas still in control of the destinies in the national championship race. Barring any major upsets over the next two weeks, the winner of the Florida-Alabama Southeastern Conference title game will face Texas in the BCS title game on Jan. 7 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. With fourth- place TCU a victory away from securing an automatic BCS bid and the loser of Florida-Alabama a lock to be selected, only two at-large berths would remain.
