Argentine composer Piazzolla's Tango Nuevo is a complex, modern rebirth of the Tango, influenced by jazz and classical music. The bandleader and bandoneon maestro ventured to America, Europe, and Argentina, in and out of favor with the musical world, since the 1930s.

Their concert two years ago at the San Carlos was memorable, especially the encore, [Astor Piazzolla]'s "Libertango." They play with extraordinary precision and with an excellent ensemble sound, which led one reviewer to describe them as playing "with one voice." Their dynamics exhibit perfect control. Their soloists play with a great deal of intensity but without ever overdoing it. This is an orchestra that at the very least plays impeccably, and at its best is capable of genuinely great music.
Highlights of the program will include "Bones for Basie," featuring the trombone section, [Tito Puente]'s "Oye Como Va," [Paul Desmond]'s "Take Five," and the band's keyboardist and vocalist Melody Cooper singing "My Funny Valentine." For me, the outstanding number in rehearsal has been a duet, ...

Saxophonist Claude Delangle makes his WCO debut with a French program on Jan. 19. At Musical Acoustic Laboratories of the University of Paris, Delangle researches the acoustics of the saxophone, sharing the French fascination with the physicality of sound. Gabriel Fauré's "Dolly Suite" is a set of six pieces written for the daughter of his friend Emma Bardac, who later married Claude Debussy. Debussy's Prélude à "L'Après-midi d'un faune" is lush, green and "drowsy with tangled slumbers." Jacques Ibert's "Concertino da Camera" for saxophone has his trademark sound - breezy and evocative. It demands clean and fast tonguing for its 16th-note runs and dead-on accuracy for the "everywhere" range of notes. Debussy's "Rhapsody for Alto Saxophone and Strings" and Astor Piazzolla's "Oblivion" an...

You can tap your feet to this music, but at the same time it's extremely dark and serious.
Andreas Delfs, music director of the Milwaukee Symphony, spoke of Roberto Sierra's "Missa Latina" and Astor Piazzolla's Concerto for Bandoneon -- this weekend's MSO program. Both come from composers who soaked up the vernacular music of their Latin American surroundings, were then conservatory trained and subsequently incorporated those vernaculars into their art.

The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra is not taking much of a summer break. Today the orchestra announced a night of Spanish music, to take place 7 p.m. July 8 at Kleinhans Music Hall.
Matthew Kraemer, associate conductor, is leading the orchestra in the overture to "West Side Story, followed by tangos by Astor Piazzolla and a whole bunch of Latin numbers including that old favorite, "Tico Tico." The great late Capitol Records bandleader Carmen Dragon had a hand in the "Tico Tico" arrangement so that makes it doubly Latin.
