DANVILLE -- Erika Coleman scored 30 points and grabbed 19 rebounds as William Fleming beat George Washington 65-55 on Saturday and assured itself of at least a playoff game for the Western Valley District title. Tiasia McGeorge had eight points and 11 assists for the Colonels.
CANTON -- Lake Anasagunticook Dam Advisory Committee Chairman Malcolm Ray assured members Monday night that the $500,000 grant to build a dam on Whitney Brook was included in the 2010 federal budget. Confusion about receipt of the federal funding resulted after a memorandum from the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development was read at the the selectmen's meeting last week. The letter stated that due to uncertainty over the 2011 federal funding for Public Facilities and Public Infrastructure Grants, the department was unable to move forward with awarding grants.
Several residents questioned police coverage now that a constable has been placed on paid administrative leave, but state Trooper Rob Hart assured town officials at Monday's Board of Selectmen meeting that coverage would not change and the town would remain protected. Part-time Constable Benjamin Quinones was placed on paid administrative leave until further notice about three weeks ago, shortly before he was fired from his lieutenant job on the Connecticut Valley Hospital police force March 24 for allegedly submitting false time sheets.
EAST RUTHERFORD -- Jim Leonhard stood on the sideline Thursday night, in uniform, but with no helmet. As one of the Jets' veteran starters, he had earned a well-deserved night off in the meaningless preseason finale. But Leonhard knew exactly what the back-of-the-roster hopefuls were going through at MetLife Stadium. He used to be one of them.
FARMINGTON -- County commissioners assured members of the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday that one of their members could be on a committee that will review applications for projects requesting TIF funds. Chamber members voiced concern over the organization not having a member on the committee.
REMEMBER Curtis LeMay, the Air Force general parodied to chilling effect by Sterling Hayden in the 1964 movie "Dr. Strangelove"? If you're too young for that reference, you probably don't recall when the concept of Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) dominated our military posture toward our Soviet enemy. I bring this up because the mid-air refueling tanker that the MAD warrior LeMay commissioned suddenly has become a controversy in the presidential campaign. MAD was based on a triad of air, land and sea forces that would punish a Soviet first strike, ending all semblance of life on the one-sixth of the planet that comprised the old Soviet Union. Toward that end, we needed not only thousands of land-based weapons, but thousands of other weapons on ships and on airplanes.
