SAN FRANCISCO The reigning assumption among many Americans is that teenagers go directly from high school to college, but that's not the way life always works. Just 27 percent of Americans over age 25 hold bachelor's degrees or higher, according to 2004 Census data.

MACHIAS Some people may take a look at Machias Memorial High School and make the assumption that a small, rural school with only 126 students cant make an impact. Three teams of students have proven that assumption incorrect, however. Two teams took first and second place in a statewide competition for entrepreneurship and one took top state honors in a culinary arts contest. All three teams will be headed to national competitions.

Isabelle Klementowski of Williamsville, former owner of Black Rock Liquor Store, died Friday in Harris Hill Nursing Facility, Lancaster, after a struggle with cancer. She was 93. Born Isabelle Platek in Buffalo, she attended Assumption Elementary School and School 42. She was a graduate of Riverside High School.

Gaffney Funeral Home Sister died peacefully at St. Joseph Residence, Seattle on Friday, September 12, 2008. She was born February 20, 1914, the daughter of John and Mabel Laviolette in Tacoma, Washington. She experienced her early childhood in Tacoma where she attended Saint Patrick School. The family moved to Bellingham where she attended Assumption grammar and high school.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) - A parent upset with the refereeing during a high school basketball game assaulted two players and a parent from the opposing team while calling them racial slurs, police said. Douglas Duyck, 42, an Assumption High School parent, has been charged with three counts of simple assault and one count of disorderly conduct by abusive epithet or threat.
