Between 1933 and 1936, Eleanor Roosevelt changed Associated Press Washington Bureau reporter Bess Furman's reporting life. She joined the AP in 1929 and was assigned to cover women, but Lou Hoover and other official wives were difficult to cover because of their rule that they were never to be quoted. When Mrs. Roosevelt came to the White House, she changed that by granting access through press conferences, travel, and friendship, and Furman's reporting changed because of Mrs. Roosevelt's interest in social problems and her desire to change the bad conditions in the country. Furman now wrote about her efforts as well as those of other women who worked in the Roosevelt administration. Associated Press MELBOURNE, Australia -- Former No. 1-ranked Justine Henin reached the semifinals in her Grand Slam comeback, beating Nadia Petrova 7-6 (3), 7-5 early today to take out the last seeded player in her half of the Australian Open draw.
Henin, unranked and playing on a wild-card entry at Melbourne Park, next will play Wimbledon semifinalist Zheng Jie, who beat Russia's Maria Kirilenko 6-1, 6-3 to equal her Chinese record for the best run at a major.

Missouri Lawyers Weekly won 10 awards in the annual Missouri Associated Press Managing Editors Awards announced Wednesday in Jefferson City.
The 10 awards were the most for any newspaper in the under 10,000 circulation newspaper category. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch won the most overall with 16 awards, including the sweepstakes award for best entry.

The Journal Record was awarded first place in the General Excellence category in its circulation division by the Associated Press Oklahoma News Executives in the organization's annual contest. The Oklahoman and the Enid News and Eagle won the top prizes for their respective divisions.
The Journal Record received 17 first-place awards in the 24 writing and photography categories, and reporter M. Scott Carter won the Sweepstakes Award for the best overall story of the year. The award recognized his ongoing coverage of water rights at Sardis Lake.

Associated Press CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Concerns about a half-empty race track dogged NASCAR long before Sunday's race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the sanctioning body's top officials didn't want to discuss attendance or any other ailments plaguing the nation's No. 1 racing series.
The conversation was instead steered to all the things NASCAR is doing right, a theme that became evident before the season started, when competitors spread a message of hope and unity.

Lebanon win its third consecutive PIAA girls basketball title, the senior guard was named the state's Class AAAA Player of the Year when the The Associated Press all-state teams were released yesterday afternoon. Four hours later, she was at home with her family watching her future team, Notre Dame, take on Texas A&M for the NCAA Division I championship.
