In an ironic twist, new research at Kansas State University suggests parents leaning on sarcasm to clarify a point with children may instead be delivering a murkier message. Speech-language pathologist Debra Burnett, assistant professor of family studies and human services, said testing indicated children at the age of 6 could recognize a comment as sarcastic.

A Fayette County man pumped four bullets into the head of another man over a drug debt, according to an assistant district attorney who is prosecuting him on robbery and homicide charges. A Paterson man was convicted Friday of aggravated manslaughter in connection with striking a woman with his vehicle early on Thanksgiving 2007, putting her in the back seat, going home to bed and leaving her in the SUV to die. Melvin Rainey, 47, was found guilty by a jury seated before state Superior Court Judge Salem Ahto in Paterson of all the most serious counts he faced -- aggravated manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, endangering an injured victim, hindering his own prosecution and tampering with evidence. He faces as much as 35 years when sentenced by Ahto on Oct. 25.
