Based on considerable anecdotal evidence, there is a growing belief that proprietary knowledge management systems (KMS) can significantly improve a firm's financial and operational performance. To date, however, there have been no scientifically based studies which empirically test the validity of such claims. In this paper, we report the results of a three year longitudinal study of 103 proprietary KMS adopting and corresponding non adopting firms. Using regression techniques, several different financial and operational measures are compared to determine whether KMS adoption provides a statistically significant incremental benefit or not. A secondary analysis of the same firms, conducted using the DuPont Analysis, is performed. In both instances the results generally support the conten...

We investigate the relation between the performance and characteristics of 1,779 domestic, actively managed retail equity mutual funds with diverse expense ratios. We show that using expense ratio standard deviation classes is an effective method for characterizing fund expenses for investors. Using various performance measures including Russell-index-adjusted returns, the results indicate that superior performance, on average, occurs among large funds with low expense ratios, low trading activity, and no or low front-end loads. Performance is invariant with respect to whether funds have 12b-1 fees.

Financial market dynamics have recently given rise to intermediation in venture capitalism. Today, this is one of the paradigms of finance theories in relation to fast-growing companies. It is in this framework that we examined how venture capitalists' active intermediation contributes to enhanced efficiency between capital markets and fast-growing companies. More specifically, we developed an empirical model of the valuation of initial public offerings based on information produced by the company and by venture capitalists. Our findings indicate that venture capitalists fulfil an intermediation role in information production by providing expertise and validating information produced by the company. Moreover, it appears that companies financed by active venture capitalists are less unde...
