Library media specialists in Indiana developed a Correlation of the Information Literacy Standards (AASL/AECT 1998) and Indiana's Academic Standards. The historical timeline is one of the more obvious options, but the charting of a sequence of events covers a variety of activities, for example, plot of a fiction book or drama, steps of a process, or the important events in the life of a famous person (see Figure 5, page 24). Used in conjunction with the evidence gathered by classroom teachers, library media specialists can show how the library media program supports the content standards and student achievement.
Although previous studies have indicated that public relations educators and professionals agreed that PR education was on target, this e-mail survey shows no substantial evidence of agreement. PRSSA professional advisors are not convinced that faculty are teaching the skills students need in industry. Professional advisors value more than do faculty advisors a curriculum that emphasizes practical experience in new media, internships, preparing students for their first job, and "hands-on experience." Accrediting bodies, including AACSB, have aggressive standards that require universities to assess student learning. Many institutions initially responded by developing multiple measure plans that assess general satisfaction of instruction within a major, student performance on a nationally normed business knowledge exams, and curriculum content and coverage through the use of focus or stakeholder groups. Unfortunately, these multiple measure plans do not adequately assess student learning goals specific to the university's program, nor do they provide direct information that would help a faculty member improve student learning in his or her course. The authors analyzed data on the information processing abilities of incarcerated youth (n = 1480) within a correctional center. The goal was to develop a learning style profile of the juvenile offenders. Based on the current sample, they concluded that the bulk of the students were figural learners in terms of the preferred modality for receiving information. Their strongest processing abilities were creativity (15% scored in the superior range) and memory (29.2% scored in the superior range). With regard to the level of complexity, the students' strengths were in relationships and transformations. Test results for Yakima Valley students in reading, writing and math show mixed results this year, mirroring statewide scores. Figures released Tuesday from two new state tests that replaced the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) show some gains in math, ups and downs in reading and a flatline in writing.
BANGOR, Maine -- A unique nationwide study of student performance found that Maine is one of only 13 states making significant progress in the area of mathematics. Reading scores are stagnant in Maine and many other states, prompting the state's education commissioner to call for an overhaul of the century-old learning system. The 2011 National Assessment of Education Progress data are unique, according to the Department of Education, because they show an apples-to-apples comparison between Maine and the other states. The program, which released its nationwide findings Tuesday, relied on testing of fourth- and eighth-grade students in math and reading.
