EVERETT -- A powerful computer system that simulates the assembly of Boeing Co.'s new 787 Dreamliner cut typical costs by about 20 percent and trimmed a full year from production, officials said Wednesday.
Leaders of Boeing's 787 program showed off the digital assembly line in a "virtual rollout" of the airliner, which is scheduled for its first test flight next summer and for delivery to airlines in 2008.

KENNA - The egg factory is rolling along at Goldtown Community Church, where thousands of the chocolate confections are sold each year to benefit the churchs building fund. Since the egg makers started keeping track in 1994, they have made 96,625 eggs and turned a $239,228 profit. Brenda Wolfe, a church member who has been part of the team for 19 years, attributes success to secret recipes, quality ingredients and enthusiastic volunteers. We share hard work, laughter and fellowship, she said. Goldtown Community Church is a church with a special love. Volunteers began working last week and eggs can be ordered through April 16. On a recent day, the crew made 1,017 eggs in their best-selling flavor of peanut butter. They also make four other flavors. The assembly line is impressive. Each v...

Chances are good that at some point during the past 10 or so years you've seen a computer simulation of an assembly line. It was only a movie, Kenneth David, senior applications engineer, Dassault Systemes DELMIA Corp, says, explaining that what was being seen was only part of the assembly system in action. It was a validation of the mechanical portion of the system. This is reality. What he's talking about is a virtual commissioning system that DELMIA has developed so that more than just kinematics, there is the ability to determine whether the control architecture and programming are working as they should -- before the system is physically built. It is called DELMIA V5 Automation. Just as digital models of parts and assemblies make all the difference for design validation, this can d...
