N. chief launches study of nuclear accident UNITED NATIONS -- The United Nations will undertake a systemwide study on the implications of the accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant in Japan, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Friday. Several agencies will prepare a report addressing the effects of nuclear safety in areas including environment, health and food security. It is to be presented at a high-level meeting on nuclear safety and security on Sept. 22 during the General Assembly in New York. A March 11 earthquake triggered a tsunami that knocked out cooling systems at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant, causing the world's worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl.

NEW YORK, May 31 /U.S. Newswire -- Drug users and other marginalized groups are being left behind in the global fight against HIV/AIDS, charged Allan Clear, executive director of the U.S.-based Harm Reduction Coalition.

First lady Laura Bush told a major AIDS conference Friday that more people must understand how the deadly virus is transmitted, and she called on countries to improve literacy so their citizens can make better choices.
In a short speech to the United Nations General Assembly High- Level Meeting on AIDS, Bush warned that no country can ignore the AIDS crisis, which has killed some 25 million people in the 25 years since it was first detected and now infects 40 million people.

UNITED NATIONS U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan challenged world leaders Wednesday to face reality and understand that to stop the spread of AIDS, they must protect the people most vulnerable to it.
In unusually forceful comments, Annan was hoping to spark action among leaders gathered for a three-day General Assembly High-Level Meeting on AIDS meant to chart a course on fighting the disease and delivering treatment to all those afflicted by it.
