  • -President [Abraham Lincoln] is shot and critically wounded at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. by John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln would linger for several hours but died at 7:22 am the following day April 15. A debate still rages among historians as to how broad based was the conspiracy to assassinate Lincoln. Regardless, it is clear that Booth was a racist who supported slavery and the South during the Civil War. Originally, he was part of a plot to kidnap Lincoln and hold him in exchange for captured Confederate soldiers. But on April 9, 1865, Confederate troops under Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox. Later that day, Lincoln gave a speech suggesting that the ex-slaves be given the right to vote. The speech infuriated Booth and thus the plot to kidn...

  • The opening words of the latest retelling of the Lincoln assassination do not instill great confidence in regular readers of history. As if to settle for all time that Abraham Lincoln was in fact assassinated, our authors chose to open their history with these words: "The story you are about to read is true

  • LINCOLN - Before the Internet and 24-hour news channels, word traveled much, much slower. In 1865, for example, it would sometimes take days before news from Washington, D.C., made its way to Central Illinois. Consider the April 17, 1865, edition of the "Illinois Journal" newspaper that was on display Tuesday at Lincoln College as Don Springer of Springfield donated an original issue to college officials.

  • 'The Conspirator' The directing career of Robert Redford has certainly dipped since 1998's "The Horse Whisperer." The new century brought average productions in "Lions for Lambs" (2007) and "The Legend of Bagger Vance" (2000). Now, the director makes a slight filmmaking rebound with "The Conspirator." The pic will not make viewers forget about Redford classics such as "Ordinary People" or "Quiz Show," but this is a step in the right direction. While the film is certainly slow in areas, it recovers with a collection of fine performances from James McAvoy, Robin Wright, Kevin Kline and Danny Huston and some engaging courtroom drama sequences. The film opens with the assassination night of President Abraham Lincoln and the ensuing hunt for John Wilkes Booth and his accomplices. The bulk of...

  • In stores THE CONSPIRATOR (2011, Lionsgate, PG-13, $30) -- Set during the aftermath of President Lincoln's assassination, Robert Redford's latest directorial effort focuses on eight conspirators, including Mary Surratt (Robin Wright), who were arrested and tried before a hastily-assembled military tribunal. Initially, lawyer Frederick Aiken (James McAvoy) is reluctant to take on Surratt's case but, as he witnesses the ways in which justice is being thwarted, he becomes her passionate advocate. The early scenes are rushed but once Redford gets to the heart of the tale, the movie displays a moral complexity rare for mainstream features. Extras: feature-length documentary about the plot to kill Lincoln, 10 featurettes, making- of short and Redford commentary.

  • Check out the movie "The Conspirator," directed and produced by Robert Redford. The story is about the assassination of President Lincoln and how the military/government conducted the business of justice to bring resolution to this tragic event and move the young country forward. I'll say no more about the movie so you will have to see it to know the full story. I found some strong parallels of lessons of management within the movie.

  • A fascinating, little-known episode in American history provides a pretext for a post-9/11 allegory and a related lecture on constitutional law in "The Conspirator," the latest yawner from director Robert Redford, a man whose politics are now easier to admire than his movies. Tastefully mounted in the manner of a made-for-TV historical drama and shot with a smeary light better suited to closeups of Greta Garbo than to courtroom tableaux, "The Conspirator" stars Robin Wright as Mary Surratt, the only woman charged as a co- conspirator in what is referred to as "the most grievous crime in our nation's history," the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. (Wright is excellent in what may be her first major "mature woman" role, even if the part mostly requires her to suffer nobly and maintain an ...
