On the critical question of how best to safeguard the normative boundaries of the religion against the threat of heretical innovations, although all pioneers of the Deoband Madrasa shared a certain set of underlying moral principles and non-negotiable normative values, the points of emphases in their discourses reveal subtle yet significant differences and ambiguities. [...] in a more general context, as Ashraf 'Alî Thanvï's discourse in the Tanqd-yi Mawlid Sharif clearly shows, an inherent antagonism between Islamic law and Sufism hardly represents the defining factor in intra-Muslim contestations on the boundaries of normative practice in the religion.
The loss of Muslim rule heightened Indian Muslims' concerns for preserving their religion and culture. [...] the failure of the Mutiny of 1857 forced them to turn to other options for safeguarding their spiritual and religious tradition(s). [...] he attempted to ground his reformation in the Qur'an, hadith compilations, and selected writings of past 'ulama.\n Those who were financially impoverished could not possibly have lived up to such obligations, and would have come to believe that they were not able to fulfill all Islamic rights, particularly with respect to financial duties.

Pakistani Taliban and allied members of al Qaeda, under new pressure from a U.S. and Pakistani offensive, may join forces with a militant Sunni Muslim group called Jundallah, which has staged attacks on Iran and strained Iranian-Pakistani relations, military specialists say. Ashraf Ali, a Peshawar-based specialist on the Taliban, told The Washington Times that given Jundallah's historical connections with al Qaeda and the Taliban, Taliban militants led by Baitullah Mehsud and his al Qaeda allies might seek refuge in Pakistan's Baluchistan province or join the ranks of Jundallah.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 24, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The U.S. Committee for Camp Ashraf Residents (USCCAR) strongly condemns the vengeful execution today of political prisoners Jaafar Kazemi and Mohammad Ali Haj-Aqai and calls on Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to swiftly and strongly denounce this heinous crime. The Committee also urges Secretary Clinton to promptly remove the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), Iran's principal opposition, from the FTO list. The unjustified blacklisting of the PMOI has not only been a major impediment to democratic change in Iran but has also been used by the governments of Iran and Iraq to subject our loved ones in Camp Ashraf in Iraq, and inside Iran, to murder and inhumane treatment.
TEHRAN, Iran - Iran has begun uranium enrichment at a new underground site well protected from possible airstrikes, a leading hardline newspaper reported Sunday in another show of defiance against Western pressure to rein in Tehran's nuclear program. Another newspaper quoted a senior commander of the powerful Revolutionary Guard force as saying Tehran's leadership has decided to order the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic oil route, if the country's petroleum exports are blocked. Revolutionary Guard ground forces also staged war games in eastern Iran in an apparent display of resolve against U.S. forces in Afghanistan.
