Jones explores Lancelot Andrewes in T. S. Eliot's Ash-Wednesday, a poem about repentance and conversion, and one that undertakes to portray the kinds of changes the soul must undergo in true penance. In this sermon where Eliot finds his motif of "turning," Andrewes too considers the natural setting appropriate to repentance.

"In shocking contrast to the Weather Bureau routine of the hurricane season, which includes a birth report of every tropical disturbance and bulletins on its growth, caprices, and probabilities, the winter gale came treacherously when the moon and sun were joined in phase and lifting the tides to the abnormal height that foretells every spring.

The spiritual season of Lent, 2010, began yesterday (Feb. 17), which was Ash Wednesday when Christians around the world received on their foreheads, smudged in the shape of a cross, the blessed ashes of burnt palms as a mark of penitence and contrition.
Those who received this mark of ashes thus signified that they are ready to follow the steps of repentance for their errors, shortcomings and sins, and to abstain from the vices that they consider are contrary to God and their brothers and sisters, and to resist the world's temptations, to reject the works of Satan, and to act charitably with others.
