  • AN interview with Coca-Cola Chairman and CEO, Muhtar Kent. AS the head honcho of a Fortune 500 company with operations in more than 200 countries, Muhtar Kent, 58, is used to a tight itinerary. When he was in town recently, to chair a US-Asean Business Council meeting, his appointment book was inevitably packed to include meetings, a courtesy call on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Razak (but as the PM had to undergo enforced confinement due to chicken pox, they spoke on the phone), and even a `visit to the market' where he and his team went down to the streets to get first-hand views from both retailers and consumers.

  • Past, Present, and Future, argue that China's current grand strategy is calculative and has three components-a nonideological approach necessary for continued economic growth, a deliberate restraint on the use of force, and an expanded involvement in regional and global multilateral forums.2 Chinese politics expert Avery Goldstein talks of a transitional strategy that puts a premium on sustaining a peaceful environment necessary for the growth that will enable it to rise to the position of a true great power. • Cyclone Nargis claimed 85,000 lives in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, when it struck in the first few days of May. Another 50,000 are still missing. Barely two weeks later, an earthquake in China's Sichuan Province killed 70,000 people and left another 18,000 missing. The Chinese government responded quickly and welcomed help from foreign disaster relief teams. The response of the Myanmar government could hardly have been more different. Foreign disaster teams were not allowed to enter the country for about two weeks. Obstacles were put in the way of Burmese nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and individuals who tried to provide assistance to victims. The callous attitude of the Myanmar government was so great that prominent government and NGO leaders around the world called for "n...
