While some townspeople remain unconvinced that Wentworth Intermediate School should be replaced, others who attended a public forum on Monday evening strongly endorsed the $39 million building proposal that will appear on the Nov. 8 ballot. I bought a 1964 house four years ago. The house has wood and stone siding out front and asbestos-cement siding on the sides and back. Many of the lowest level shingles are badly chipped. I am not quite ready to take the plunge to replace the siding yet because of cost. Is there a way to replace the chipped shingles with either new asbestos-cement pieces, or look-alike shingles?I did some research on the Web and in the library and found very little information about asbestos-cement siding repair. Does one replace a asbestos- cement shingle the way a wood shingle is replaced (pull off the damaged shingles by cutting off the nails from behind, then insert and nail in a new shingle)? As workers on ladders scraped off asbestos-laden siding Thursday, PUSH Buffalo showed off the coming green restoration of a building in the blighted West Side neighborhood where "Extreme Makeover" was filmed last year. The interior of the 100-year-old, four-unit building, at 456 Massachusetts Ave. and 19th Street, was gutted and rebuilt a few years ago. Funds totaling $163,000, secured through New York State Homes and Community Renewal's Urban Initiatives program, will pay for a new metal roof system, complete insulation, asbestos removal and landscaping.
