Edna Godin tried to get her landlord's attention last week by stuffing newspaper under the siding of her Biddeford apartment building at 358 Main St. and lighting it, police say. Biddeford police charged her with arson, even though the asbestos siding didn't burn.
My friends and I keep an eye out for each other's wants. Perhaps this huntergatherer mentality is innate, and maybe shopping satisfies it for other people. The sheer randomness of "the find" guarantees a tingle of surprise and delight (warning sign of possible serotonin flush, addiction alert!) as I jam "the find" into my waistband and push off, calculating where I'm going to put it when I arrive home to Squalid Manor. It's a wreck!" my boss would say. "I haven't had time to clean up for you..." Wow, I guess it's true that people clean up for the housecleaner! This was the kind of home where you take off your shoes (a reasonable inconvenience in the service of the goddess Hygieia). Everything looked spotless. My job was simple: murder the microbes. And so I'd grab the basket of cleanin...

While some townspeople remain unconvinced that Wentworth Intermediate School should be replaced, others who attended a public forum on Monday evening strongly endorsed the $39 million building proposal that will appear on the Nov. 8 ballot. Photos displayed at the forum, held at Scarborough High School, showed groundwater seeping into the school's basement crawl space, mold growing on exterior siding, asbestos crumbling in window casings, former bathrooms being used as storage and instructional space, and evidence of a rodent infestation in one of 16 portable classrooms.
I bought a 1964 house four years ago. The house has wood and stone siding out front and asbestos-cement siding on the sides and back. Many of the lowest level shingles are badly chipped. I am not quite ready to take the plunge to replace the siding yet because of cost. Is there a way to replace the chipped shingles with either new asbestos-cement pieces, or look-alike shingles?I did some research on the Web and in the library and found very little information about asbestos-cement siding repair. Does one replace a asbestos- cement shingle the way a wood shingle is replaced (pull off the damaged shingles by cutting off the nails from behind, then insert and nail in a new shingle)? It's probably too much for a DIY project, but I don't know how to go about finding a professional that will ...
As workers on ladders scraped off asbestos-laden siding Thursday, PUSH Buffalo showed off the coming green restoration of a building in the blighted West Side neighborhood where "Extreme Makeover" was filmed last year. The interior of the 100-year-old, four-unit building, at 456 Massachusetts Ave. and 19th Street, was gutted and rebuilt a few years ago. Funds totaling $163,000, secured through New York State Homes and Community Renewal's Urban Initiatives program, will pay for a new metal roof system, complete insulation, asbestos removal and landscaping.
Writ of mandamus denied where there was some evidence to support finding by the Industrial Commission of Ohio that the claimant's last injurious exposure to asbestos was during his employment with the relator.

Question: I have a century-old home with asbestos siding. English ivy was growing on the exterior, and when I ripped it off the house, it left little nubs and trails. How can I remove them before I paint the house? Scrubbing and sanding by hand didn't work. Answer: Of all the plants that climb on dwellings, you picked one of the very best. First, let's review our Pennsylvania vines. At Old Economy in Ambridge, they plant grapes -- Vitis vinifera -- so that with the help of trellises they can pick the grapes from the second- story windows. Grapes climb using tendrils.
