A new federal rule that will force universities to get approval from each state where they enroll students online might affect who can sign up for University of Missouri e-courses in the future.
That's because some states are charging out-of-state institutions as much as $25,000 per academic program or $2,500 per student to offer distance education to residents.

Glen Burnie Bancorp, the parent company of the Bank of Glen Burnie, saw more than $750,000 in second quarter earnings.
Last week, Glen Burnie Bancorp reported $758,000 in net income or $0.28 per share, for the three-month period ending on June 30. Net income for the first six months of 2011 was $1,467,000 or $0.54 earnings per share as compared to $721,000, or $0.27 earnings per share, for the same period in 2010.

Gibraltar Industries' second-quarter profits more than doubled as the Hamburg-based building products manufacturer's sales grew by 18 percent.
The company's profits jumped to $7.8 million, or 25 cents per share, from $3.5 million, or 11 cents per share, as Gibraltar benefited from an aggressive program over the last few years to reduce its costs as the recession battered its key construction markets.

AT&T has launched a fully managed service that provides US businesses with a virtual contact center hosted in AT&T Internet data centers. The telecom services and technologies giant has offered hosted solutions for dedicated customers for a number of years, but this is the first time the company has put out a shared tenant offering available as software-as-a-service on a per-port or per-seat basis. The solution, AT&T Hosted Integrated Contact Services, is based on the contact management suite from Genesys Telecommunications Laboratories and includes intelligent call routing and management capabilities. Depending on customer needs, the service also can include advanced speech recognition, text-to-speech, and routing for Web, email, and chat applications.

Last week, Glen Burnie Bankcorp reported $770,000 in net income or $0.29 per share for the three-month period ending Sept. 31. Net income for the nine-month period from January through September of this year was $2.2 million, or $0.83 per share as compared to $1.4 million or $0.52 per share, for the same period in 2010.

The University of Memphis got the worst of it when tuition increases were recommended by the Tennessee Board of Regents' finance committee Monday.
The board recommended increases mostly in the 8 or 9 percent range, but the UofM is set for an 11 percent increase, which comes to $288 more per 12-hour undergraduate semester, as compared with $192 per 12-hour undergraduate semester at East Tennessee State University or $132 per 12-hour semester at Southwest Tennessee Community College (which will have an additional $20/hour fee for nursing and allied health classes).
