If you go John Mayer and Guster perform starting at 7:30 p.m. today at West Virginia University Coliseum in Morgantown. Tickets $29-$43. Call 342-5757.
Contrary to some critics' beliefs, John Mayer's often goofy stage show isn't a marketing ploy. It's not a gimmick to endear fans to the dorkier side of Mayer's persona. In fact, according to the artist it's not even rehearsed.

John Mayer returns home as a guy in the news Since this is a column and I'm not supposed to be objective, let me make something very clear: I don't like John Mayer's music.
It's not horrible or anything, it's just, simply, spectacularly bland, the kind of stuff that doesn't even get noticed if females -- and some males -- didn't find him dreamy. Put it this way: There are a handful of singer/songwriters right here in the Elm City that are far more talented and pen far better tunes.

Spending a few years as die missing link between Beck and John Mayer, Cope is still managing to give die beach-going acoustic guitar troubadour its moody hip-hop makeover.

John Mayer is typically a pretty talkative, upfront kinda guy, famous for personally answering fans' e-mail queries and blogging away at www.JohnMayer.com.
Alas, in the days prior to his concert this weekend at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum, the 30-year-old troubadour has been pressed for, as they say, time.

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, "Couldn't Stand the Weather: Legacy Edition" (Epic/Legacy, two discs). Get this. It's one of the great American discs of the past 40 years and it's presented here in an optimal way. Six years after it appeared in 1984, one of the greatest guitarists of his time was dead in a helicopter crash. To put it mildly, then, there isn't exactly a limitless abundance of music available (or even possible) by Stevie Ray and none of it was better in the studio than the original "Couldn't Stand The Weather," in which every cut is a gem and some are Stevie Ray In Excelsis (his version of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child" for instance). For this new Legacy edition, it has been remastered and you get 10 bonus tracks including three never before release...

Most days Erin Shellman is occupied by serious thoughts. The 2002 graduate of Miamisburg High School is currently a Ph.D. student at the University of Michigan studying bioinformatics, but she still finds time to cut loose and create earthy acoustic music as lead singer and upright bassist for Ann Arbor roots group Lake Folk.
Shellman answered some questions last week about her band, which features Eric Anderson (banjo, mandolin, vocals), Danielle Gartner (cello, mandolin, vocals), Bryan Mayer (guitars) and John Nipper (percussion). Lake Folk will perform Thursday at Canal Street Tavern.
