transformed a life-long passion for amateur photography into a professional - and artistic - quest. Leap, and the net will appear," she said, quoting a favorite book. It's a guiding principle that encouraged her to pursue photography more seriously about seven years ago.

The relationship between photography and war has been uneasy ever since Mathew Brady's assistants Alexander Gardner and Timothy O'Sullivan, laboriously shooting the aftermath of battles in the Civil War, moved dead bodies around to make their images more picturesque and artistic. That casual attitude toward reality changed as cameras became smaller and more mobile and photojournalists developed professional standards and became affiliated with worldwide news organizations.
This study examined how Texas community college artist-educators balance artistic productivity with their teaching responsibilities. The 98 survey respondents represented 76.6% of a stratified random sample of the full-time instructors in visual arts departments within the 50 Texas public community college districts. Access to studio space and equipment, peer support, and new avenues for artistic expression and creative stimulation were seen as promoting or enhancing artistic production. Lack of studio time for producing one's artwork was cited a barrier to artistic production, as were the demands of teaching and related responsibilities. In addition, those who saw themselves more as artists than as educators or who saw themselves equally as artists and educators were more likely to bal...

Step outside at sunset. That glorious light at the end of the day, just as the sun is dropping below the horizon, creates what photographers call the golden hour. "It's the time of day when the sun has almost set and everything glows," author and part-time Santa Fean Charles Churchward said in an email. "Usually a person will look healthiest and most radiant in that golden light." Having spent years working as a design and art director in the magazine world - for the likes of Vogue and Vanity Fair -Churchward knows his photographic terms well. But he may be most familiar with this term because of photographer Herb Ritts, who was his business associate and close friend for many years. "This was Herb's favorite time to shoot and usually when most of his work was done," he said. Perhaps, t...

A truly great art gallery not only inspires but connects people within its community. At the Donna Seager Gallery, its namesake proprietor also hopes that viewers find something different to experience every time they venture inside. And indeed, the gallery's diversity and quality of Bay Area artwork is impressive. When searching for art to display - having been in the gallery world for 32 years and with a background in art history - Seager relies on good old-fashioned visceral reaction. "It's a fist in your gut," she explains. "I look for well-crafted complexity, richness and a magical quality that stays with you." The gallery has recently changed from doing a show a month to a show every six to eight weeks, allowing for "more depth," says Seager, who's also added a West Wing gallery s...
