The IRS is developing artificial intelligence (AI) and expert systems to assist in collection and processing. Telefile is a system where taxpayers filing 1040EZs may do so over the phone. Expert systems are being developed to assist with requests for waivers, tax questions, audit candidate selection, penalty abatement candidate selection, employee plan examination and correspondence. Expert systems are a major component of the IRS's Tax System Modernization plan.
