LOS ANGELES, Oct. 19 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Farm Sanctuary, the nation's leading farm animal shelter and advocacy organization, is challenging the intensive confinement of pigs in a landmark case. California Penal Code section 597t mandates that "every person who keeps an animal confined in an enclosed area shall provide it with an adequate exercise area." Farm Sanctuary filed a lawsuit in September 2004 against Corcpork, Inc., one of California's largest pig breeding facilities, for confining breeding sows in two foot wide "gestation crates" for the majority of their lives. The suit alleges that this intensive confinement fails to allow any exercise area at all, let alone an adequate exercise area, and violates Section 597t. In June 2005, the case was dismissed on a technicality and sum...

He's strong, healthy and hirsute. She's social and friendly, with Rubenesque curves. Yet the dalliances of this walrus couple have failed to yield a baby, a fact that confounds experts at Vallejo, Calif.-based Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, which seeks to breed the rare and mysterious species. So scientists are making the first- ever attempt at artificial insemination -- if only they can persuade male Sivuqaq, a rambunctious creature the size of a Volkswagen, to donate sperm.
Once we get the sperm, we're good to go," said marine mammal reproductive physiologist Holley Muraco. "I feel confident that we're going to have walrus babies.

Thailand's Chiang Mai Zoo, which sells multicolored paper made from the excrement of its two resident pandas, reported it resorted to artificial insemination to impregnate the female after failing to encourage the male to mate with her by putting him on a special thet, holding a mock wedding and showing him videos of pandas having sex. "He just didn't want to mate," said Sophon Dummui, who oversees the country's zoos. "He was looking at her as a friend.
