  • * Is the guest list for Gov. Manchin's different Christmas parties public information? If it is, I wish the Gazette would publish that guest list and a commentary of how many on that guest list are political hacks, large Democratic Party donors and politicians. * I love the articles on global warming. Maybe the ice storms are indirectly, or directly, caused by global warming. It is all connected. Nobody is isolated anymore. The world affects everybody, especially the climate. Thanks for the articles.

  • The exhibit itself consists of photographs measuring 40-by-50 inches of landscapes from a variety of locations around the world. The size serves to draw the viewer into the photos. "You don't have to go right up to see what's in the picture," [Susannah Sayler] said. There won't be a "before-and-after" element to the exhibit either, as only new photographs will be displayed. Sayler feels that comparing old and new photos causes people to think about global warming too much. "I want people to interact with the images in an emotional way, not just mental, with thinking of it as data," she said. Sayler noted that although she's always believed in global warming, she never tried to do anything about it until she read writer Elizabeth Kolbert's articles on global warming in The New Yorker in ...

  • With all the news broadcasts and magazine articles on global warming and its effects on wildlife around the world - the polar bears in Churchill, Manitoba to the elephant seals and penguins in Antarctica, the climate is warming and it is effecting the environment. Whether the changing temperatures are due to man or nature, I really don't know; however, I do know that the ice shelf in Antarctica is shrinking at a dramatic rate and it is affecting the animal (and bird) populations. We (Bill Handel and family) will be doing another group trip to Antarctica in December 2009. I will be anxious to see the differences from my last trip in January 2004. On this trip we will also be going to South Georgia Island, where I'm told elephant seal pups are friendly and slide right up to you for a litt...

  • On Saturday, April 25, 2009, the Carson Chapter of TLOD partnered with the City of Carson in a Health Fair held at the Congresswoman JuanitaMillender-McDonald Community Center in the City of Carson. The Carson Chapter's display focused was, the Status of Women Thrust as it relates to HIV-AIDS Awareness and Sickle Cell Awareness by distributing literature on these prevalent diseases in our community. Twelve members of the Carson Chapter of Top Ladies of Distinction (TLOD) became affiliated with the National Council of Negro Women, an organization whose Thrusts and Programs are similar to those of TLOD. Ms. Betty Randle and Ms. Sally McDonald, members of the Compton Section of NCNW meeting. There were approximately 59 display tables of pertinent health information, ranging from articles o...

  • Patrick Michaels' Commentary column "National Geographic melting down?" (Tuesday) is spot-on. This once-highly respected magazine is so no more. Three articles on global warming, covering 74 pages in this month's magazine, concentrate on telling us three things: One, that the Earth is undergoing rapid, sudden climate changes; two, that these are somehow abnormal and bad; and three, that they are caused by humans putting too much carbon dioxide (CO2) into the air, causing global warming.

  • I read this in "Carbon tax can stop global warming" in the March 10 Chronicle: "The global warming train finally is leaving the station with almost everybody on board - except for a few diehard deniers from ultra-conservative groups and The Flat Earth Society. I will mention only one scientist who is critical of the current theory on global warming: French geophysicist Claude Allgre. Dr. Allgre has written more than 100 scientific articles, 11 books and received numerous scientific awards. Dr. Allgre is a member of both the French Academy of Science and the U.S. National Academy of Science. Dr. Allgre also is a member of France's Socialist Party.

  • Anthony Parrille's claim that cosmic rays cause global warming is incorrect. The paper released by CERN a few weeks ago in Nature represents the first round of findings from an ongoing study on the roles of sulfuric acid, ammonia, and cosmic rays on nucleation - the forming of "clumps" of nuclei, necessary for condensation, from vapors in the atmosphere. This represents one small piece of the large and immensely complicated science of climate. Although the study has produced results which are interesting to climate scientists, it draws no conclusions regarding global warming. From the Editor's Summary of the article in Nature: "Despite extensive research, we still lack a quantitative understanding of the nucleation mechanism and the possible role of cosmic rays, creating one of the larg...

  • Is Al Gore right about global warming? Yes. Mr. Gore presents a compelling case that the debate about whether global warming is real is over. Of the over 900 peer- reviewed articles on climate change published in scientific journals over the past 10 years, zero disputed the causes of global warming. It's us.
