Different types of arthritis have different symptoms. In general, people with most forms of arthritis have pain and stiffness in their joints. To make a diagnosis, most doctors use a combination of methods and tests including a medical history, a physical examination, x rays, and laboratory tests.
Although there is no cure for most forms of arthritis, various therapies can help patients manage symptoms and improve their overall quality of life. The choice of treatment depends on the type of arthritis, the severity of symptoms, the patient's general health, and other factors.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an abnormality in the body's immune system that causes inflammation of the joints. In the United States, RA affects 2.1 million people. While the disease usually strikes women between the ages of 25 and 50, anyone can have RA, including infants and children. Among people with RA, women outnumber men three-to-one.
Juvenile arthritis refers to arthritis or an arthritis-related condition that occurs before age 16. Nearly 7,000 children in Michigan have a form of juvenile arthritis. The most common form of arthritis in children is juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). It is one of the most common chronic childhood illnesses occurring more often than insulin-dependent juvenile diabetes.

* Rheumatoid arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic (long-lasting) disease that can affect joints in any part of the body. With rheumatoid arthritis, the immune system-the body's defense system against disease-mistakenly causes the joint lining to swell. The inflammation then spreads to the surrounding tissues, and can eventually damage cartilage and bone.
Osteoarthritis is typically diagnosed with a complete medical history, including a description of your symptoms, and physical examination. Imaging techniques - such as X-rays or magnetic resonance imaging MRI - can show the condition of the joints. If other types of arthritis are suspected, laboratory tests on blood, urine and/or joint fluid may be helpful in determining the type of arthritis. These tests also can help rul...

WASHINGTON - Dr. Sue Zieman can almost set her watch by her disease. Twice a day, she gets a fever and the already arthritic joints in her arms and hands, legs and feet abruptly and painfully swell even more. During the evening flare, even the tendons in her feet puff up, like ropes just under her skin.
The rest of the day, her joints are so stiff that the once robust Maryland physician frequently uses a scooter to get around. Just shaking hands hurts the 47 year old.

The cooler temperatures of fall and winter are often a challenge for pets suffering from arthritis. Also called osteoarthritis, or OA, arthritis refers to a breakdown of the cartilage in a joint, which allows the bones to rub against each other. This leads to inflammation and pain, often so severe that animals are unable to walk or move comfortably.
According to the Morris Animal Foundation, 20 percent of adult dogs and 45 percent of cats experience arthritic pain. Arthritis can result from genetic malformations of bone that create misalignment of the joints -- such as hip or elbow dysplasia -- or from trauma, infection of the joints, poor nutrition and auto-immune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis.
