Some are very small and others larger than an adult man, and all of them decorated in great detail. And they are all at least 25 centuries old and hauntingly beautiful. Only the hard heart of a Philistine could not be moved by the religious art of ancient Greece.

omething about Russia and winter seems a natural fit. Perhaps it is the way the elements conspire to mimic our conception of Russian climes, with gray skies, long nights and the kind of cold that seeps into your bones. Tunisia may be much smaller than its neighbors Libya, to the southeast, and Algeria, to the west, but as a crossroad of civilizations for 12,000 years, its rich cultural heritage could rival even the largest country.
The North African republic is the honored country for this year's Memphis in May International Festival. The monthlong event includes exhibitions that highlight Tunisian culture in terms of art, music, religion, nature and the role of women in the nation's long history.
