A shooting range along the Passaic River is polluted with high levels of lead, arsenic and cancer-causing compounds that may be reaching the river and water supplies downstream, tests performed for The Record show.
The tests found soil at the North Jersey Clay Target Club in Fairfield contaminated with lead levels rivaling those at federal Superfund sites. Water in a pond on the property contained more than 800 times the lead and nearly 200 times the arsenic allowed by state regulations. A ditch fed by the pond and leading to the Passaic had nearly seven times the permissible level of lead.

Nearly four years ago, Clifton voters approved an $11 million plan to convert an old industrial building into classrooms for 500 high school students.
They hadn't been told that groundwater on the 3-acre site had excessive levels of pesticides, nor that arsenic and other poisons were present at elevated levels and that other dangerous organic compounds had seeped into the ground just outside the building's rear entrance.

BRANFORD -- Nine months after residents were told four parcels between 483 and 545 E. Main St. tested positive for soil contamination, state and federal environmentalists have teamed up with the property owners to streamline remediation efforts. "One way or the other, (cleanup) will occur," said Paul Jameson, an environmental analyst for the state Department of Environmental Protection who is overseeing the project.
Last fall, the DEP notified area residents, including those in the densely populated Shore Line Mobile Home Park, that soil samplings taken on the properties in July showed varied levels of arsenic and suspected carcinogenic chemical compounds.
