Some in the special operations community are privately criticizing the wisdom of Saturday's failed rescue mission in Afghanistan, saying commanders should have sent more than the one Chinook helicopter that was shot down, killing 30 American troops, including 23 elite Navy SEALs.
They also questioned whether the quickly assembled mission was necessary to rescue a band of Army Rangers reportedly under fire from Taliban militants.

An estimated 1,500 homeless people will feast today at the largest Thanksgiving Day meal in the San Fernando Valley, giving many a warm escape from the surprisingly cold holiday weather.
The 250 volunteers serving the meals at Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission in North Hollywood will be part of a larger army of people involved in community service, making Thanksgiving dinner possible for all the needy in Southern California.

On Wednesday, Sept. 28, middle school students at North Cross School gathered together in small groups across town to provide community service to area organizations.
Students helped out at several places, including Apple Ridge Farm, the Clean Valley Council, Friendship Health Center, Hopetree Academy, the Jefferson Center, Richfield Retirement Community, the Rescue Mission, the Roanoke Valley SPCA, the Salvation Army, Feeding America Southwest Virginia, the Taubman Museum of Art and at the North Cross campus.

The food bank works in conjunction with Family Service Inc., the Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Montana Rescue Mission, Women's and Family Shelter, Gateway House, Rainbow House, Team Mentoring, Special K Ranch, Community Hope in Laurel and several other Yellowstone County programs throughout the year.

At an event to recognize Homeless Awareness Week in Michigan, held on Nov. 14, 2005, Charter One Bank presented a lead gift of $75,000 to the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness (MCAH). The donation, which was given at Grace Centers of Hope in Pontiac, MI, will be distributed by MCAH, to fund 25 Metropolitan Detroit homeless shelters to assist in defraying heating costs this winter.
