Lean Six Sigma (LSS) is the new buzz phrase in the Army. Six Sigma made its Army debut with Army Materiel Command (AMC). Lean was officially introduced in 2002 by the then AMC commanding general, Paul Kern. LSS allows AMC to increase the number of vehicles and systems repaired, improve delivery times and reduce repair cycles -- while decreasing costs. Six Sigma will eliminate defects, but it will not address the question of how to optimize process flow. Each approach can result in dramatic improvement, while utilizing both methods simultaneously holds the promise of being able to address all types of process problems with the most appropriate toolkit.

More than 30 commands and agencies are affected by the Army-wide reductions, with the majority of the cuts taking place within U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command; U.S. Army Materiel Command; U.S. Army Installation Management Command; and Headquarters, Department of the Army.
