  • After graduating from Hutchinson-Central High School in 1950, Cravane M. Givens received a football scholarship to North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. At the historically black university, all of the male students were required to receive two years of military training. Givens initially participated in Army infantry drills, but when the Air Force added its presence to the school, he became a cadet in that program.

  • Dr. [Clive Belnavis], who was the recipient of the Meritorious Service Award, attended Kingston College between 1946-1951. He served as a sergeant in the army and air cadet force at the school. Dr. Belnavis has an illustrious career and was at one time the fitness trainer for Jamaica's national netball team, men's volleyball team and XLCR track and field team which went to the Penn Relays twice.

  • One of Utah's greatest World War II heroes, Air Force Lt. Col. Chase J. Nielsen (Ret.) of the Tokyo Doolittle Raiders, died March 23 at his home in Brigham City. Born 90 years ago in Hyrum, Colo., Nielsen earned a civil engineering degree from Utah State University in 1939 and enlisted in what was then the Army Air Corps (later the Air Force) as a flying cadet. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1941.

  • CHEYENNE (WTE) - A Wyoming Army National Guard UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter is at the scene to rescue an Air Force Academy cadet from Eagle Peak in Colorado. Lt. Col. Scott Schofield said in a press release that the request was made to Wyoming just before 4 p.m. Saturday because there were no medical evacuation helicopters and crews available from Fort Carson in Colorado. The Blackhawk and its medical crew arrived at the scene at about 5:45 p.m.

  • WILLIAMSBURG - Gene "Stoney" Stoneburner, 86, went with his maker into eternal peace Jan. 27, 2006, from his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Warsaw, Ind., the son of the late James and Bertha Stoneburner. Gene graduated from Leesburg High School and attended Manchester College until his senior year, when he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps Flying Cadet program. He served much of his Air Force time flying cargo and supplies to the islands in the South Pacific. Following his active service, he joined the reserves and completed his college education, obtaining a B.S. degree in chemistry from the University of Houston.
