Navy is smart on risks
Re "Women safe on subs," letters, May 23: Contrary to the view of the writer, the Navy's caution about women and radiation is absolutely warranted. It is not just a ploy to keep them off subs. Unfortunately, I speak from experience. While on active duty, I was exposed to armor-piercing ammunition. This ammunition is tipped with depleted uranium. Not until 10 years after my initial exposure did I become ill with my first cancer. I have been fighting for my life ever since. Now I am also in a fight with the Veterans Administration.

With annual defense authorization and spending bills before the House and Senate, Connecticut lawmakers are focusing this year on the mental and physical health of U.S. service members with mixed results. House leadership last week accepted an amendment from U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays, R-4, calling on the Pentagon to work with other agencies to investigate the effect of depleted uranium ammunition on veterans' health.
The military uses the substance in armor-piercing ammunition because it's 70 percent denser than lead. Dust created by depleted uranium rounds' firing and impact is a leading suspect in Gulf War syndrome experienced by veterans of the 1990-91 war.
