Navy is smart on risks Re "Women safe on subs," letters, May 23: Contrary to the view of the writer, the Navy's caution about women and radiation is absolutely warranted. It is not just a ploy to keep them off subs. Unfortunately, I speak from experience. While on active duty, I was exposed to armor-piercing ammunition. This ammunition is tipped with depleted uranium. Not until 10 years after my initial exposure did I become ill with my first cancer. I have been fighting for my life ever since. Now I am also in a fight with the Veterans Administration.
