Binary logistic regression analyses were performed on institutional data from a large urban community college in order to identify predictors of performance in a content course (psychology) that had high literacy demands. It was found that students who completed college English were more likely to pass the content course than students with developmental-level English skills. Also, academically underprepared students who completed developmental English passed the content course at the same rate as students who entered the college with college-level skills. Thus, once students' current level of literacy skill, measured by the highest English course completed, was considered, their initial literacy level upon entry in college was not predictive of achievement in the content course. The study correctly classified 53% of the participants as journalism, communication, or non-majors. Discriminant analysis found that writing apprehension, self-efficacy, and experience were positive predictors of academic major.

The goal of the study was to analyze the working methods and composing processes of six law students as they each wrote two briefs, one at the pre-trial level and one at the appellate level, for a required second-year legal writing course. The students were selected for the study based on the recommendation of their first-year Legal Writing I (LWI) professors. Each of the LWI professors was asked to nominate six students for the study: two students who were highly successful in their LWI class, two who were moderately successful, and two who were marginally successful. In their post-study interviews, all six students said that they believed the course had been a success for them. They believed that they had learned to argue persuasively and effectively, and they believed that when asked...
