[...] I locate each illustration within a particular constitutional modality; that is, I identify the form of argument that canonized the particular text. [...] the Gettysburg Address, which appears in the final section, makes up a part of the ethical canon: it is a product of Lincoln's ethical argument about constitutional meaning, and it is now among those texts a practitioner can use - or at least must account for - as she constructs constitutional arguments rooted in the ethos of American democracy.\n426 That is, without the concept of metonyms, it might seem perfectly appropriate to understand canonical texts as the argumentative analog of proper names; the reference is to a particular text in the world, and the meaning of the text - once established - remains ever the same.

According to Young, the main features of "rationality" in modern political thought arose from an excluding process, which becomes evident once a closer look is addressed to the basic validity standards of public discourse. [...] this would imply refusing the intrinsic normativity that Benhabib finds in the model of rational argumentative justification, which is based on standards of universalization that cannot in the end get along without any problem with her conception of "concrete" other and with its main features: situatedness, concreteness, particularity.

A scale for measuring argumentative flexibility is developed and tested. The study examines the impact of trait argumentativeness and argumentative flexibility on two factors: message response style to argumentative and aggressive arguers, and intentions to continue or discontinue an argument marked by substantive and relational conflict. The study also seeks to identify the type of interpersonal strategies that high trait arguers and high flexibility arguers are likely to choose if faced with an opponent who argues aggressively. The results of the study are discussed.
