He was right-Argentines felt horror because [Diego Maradona] has a proven capacity to cause collateral damage with his combustible personality. But there was also joy, or at least hope. All Argentines want to see their soccer legend rehabilitate his image, and by extension-his country's.
After all, Maradona's fortunes do coincide with Argentina's. When Maradona was at his best and led his team to the 1986 World Cup, Argentina was still buoyed by the optimism surrounding the country's return to democracy three years before.

DOETINCHEM, Netherlands -- Midfielder Lionel Messi led Argentina past South American rival Colombia 2-1 on Wednesday and will face Juanfran's Spain in the World Youth Championship quarterfinals.
Juanfran's two goals led Spain to a 3-0 win over Turkey. The host Netherlands also reached the final eight, riding a goal and assist from Ajax striker Ryan Babel to beat Chile 3-0, and will play Nigeria, which edged Ukraine 1-0, in Saturday's quarterfinals.

Chandler Gagnon of Bartlett has been selected to play on the United States Olympic Development soccer team. The United States will send four teams to Buenos Aires, Argentina, Feb. 14-22.
Gagnon will be playing for the Region 3 team (Southeast Region). Matches will be played against other 15- and 16-year-old academy teams from throughout South America. He was also selected to attend the inter-regional event which was played at the Disney Wide World of Sports (DWWS) in Orlando during the Christmas holiday break.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina | Diego Maradona was removed as Argentina's soccer coach Tuesday, his stay ending after almost two years on the job and a humiliating exit in the World Cup quarterfinals.
The Argentine Football Association said it would not renew his contract. The federation had offered Maradona a four-year contract through the 2014 World Cup, but Maradona said he would do so only if his entire staff remained.
