  • During my last eye exam I asked the doctor what nutrients and dietary plans I should follow to maintain healthy eyes. He explained that other than periodic exams there was nothing else I could take to protect my vision. In a study published recently in Archives of Ophthalmology, researchers asked 30 men who were regular exercisers and did not have glaucoma to do bench presses while breathing normally and while holding their breath. Their intraocular eye pressure was then measured during the exercises.

  • CHICAGO Two new studies give one more reason to eat a diet rich in fish: prevention of age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in old age. The omega-3 fatty acids found in fish such as salmon are already known to help the heart and brain stay healthy. The new studies, described Monday in the Archives of Ophthalmology, add to evidence that fish eaters also protect the eyes.

  • When Shannon Wyatt, 28, went to see "Avatar" in 3-D last winter, everyone around her marveled that they felt as if they were swimming with jellyfish-like creatures on the planet Pandora. Wyatt only felt dizzy and got a headache. I got really sick in it," says Wyatt, who lives outside Chicago. "I thought it was partially animated and partially not." She chalked up her reaction to exhaustion.
