Mark Granlund is always on the lookout for people who will help "fight the good fight," he said. As executive director of the Architectural Heritage Center, Granlund is passionate about historic preservation. He searches for new recruits - those who can make donations to the Heritage Center and support its mission to save historically significant buildings.
The historic Academy Theater in the Montavilla neighborhood will be donating 15 percent of its concessions sales on March 11 to support the Architectural Heritage Center. Originally opened in 1948, the theater was closed in the 1970s. A full-scale renovation was performed on the theater, and it was reopened in 2005 with a restored rounded lobby, new neon signage and three screens with stadium seating.
In honor of National Historic Preservation Month in May, the Architectural Heritage Center will play host to PlaceEconomics' principal and historic preservation guru Donovan Rypkema on Saturday, May 10 at McMenamin's Kennedy School. The event, sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, McMenamins and Daniels Development Co., will feature a discussion with Rypkema on the economics of historic preservation and how preservation can be used to develop more livable and green cities. PlaceEconomics is a Washington, DC-based real estate and economic development consulting firm that focuses on the reuse of historic building in downtown and neighborhood commercial districts. The Architectural Heritage Center wants to know your 10 favorite Portland buildings. As part of Oregon's sesquicentennial celebration, the AHC is asking Portlanders to e-mail a list of their top 10 Portland buildings to AHC education manager Val Ballestrem, valb@visitahc.org, by Feb. 1.
Fort Lauderdale Housing Authority officials are continuing their effort to demolish the Dr. Kennedy Homes public housing projects so they can build a new development. Only a portion of the new buildings would be designated for low-income tenants who could face stricter requirements to qualify. The Bosco-Milligan Foundation can't rebuild the Oriental Theatre or the Jacobs-Dolph Mansion. But with a new exhibit at the Architectural Heritage Center, the preservation unit's executive director believes she's doing the next best thing. The Heritage Center this summer will be home to three exhibits celebrating forgotten artifacts of Portland's built history. Two - one of which has yet to open - focus on hardware; the third exhibit recalls demolished city buildings and contrasts their designs with the buildings that replaced them.

Portland may not be known for snow during its winter months, but the local creative spirit prevails through the cold. This year, the Architectural Heritage Center is hosting an exhibit dedicated to holiday cheer for Portlanders with a mind for architecture. The exhibit, dubbed the Architecture and Cityscapes, is free and open to the public through December, with a reception planned for Dec. 7. The exhibit opens Nov. 19 at the AHC, located at 701 S.E. Grand Ave., and the architectural-themed work will remain on display through Jan. 31.
