State lawmakers need to come up with about $153 million to fully restore the ailing Capitol building, the state's architect said Tuesday. Speaking at an interim meeting of the House of Representatives' Appropriations and Budget Committee, Duane Mass, the Capitol's architect and curator, said the building continues to deteriorate. The building's most pressing problem is its exterior, Mass told lawmakers.
Although it's about $34.7 million shy of the needed amount, a $50 million bond proposal will go a long way toward refurbishing and stabilizing the crumbling state Capitol, the architect who wrote a study of the building said. Released in December 2010, the report by Mass Architects detailed how Oklahoma's state Capitol was literally crumbling and needed more than $84 million in structural, plumbing and electrical repairs.

Following numerous delays, the $27 million renovation of Capitol Complex Building 3 could get underway as early as August. A 56-year-old office building at the Capitol Complex is getting a major makeover. Architect Alan Weiskopf told the Capitol Building Commission on Wednesday that renovation of Building 3 is expected to be completed by June 2010. Weiskopf is the lead architect for Perfido, Weiskopf, Wagstaff & Goettel of Pittsburgh, which received a $1.8 million architectural and engineering contract for the project.
