Though often heavily rooted in tradition, law firm design is a complex process that should be tied to a firm's goals and culture. That's the opinion of Dan Jay, an architect with Clayton-based Christner, and Jay should know. His firm handled the design of the St. Louis office of Lewis, Rice & Fingersh. Spanning six floors, the project, completed in March 2010, marked the firm's move to 600 Washington Ave., the tower at the former St. Louis Centre. Christner also handled a two-year revamp of Thompson Coburn, which was completed in February. Experienced at working on law firm architecture and decor, Jay's portfolio also includes extensive work with Fortune 500 companies in St. Louis with a special focus on environmentally friendly practices that conserve energy and reduce waste.

BLOOMINGTON - German philosopher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe once called architecture "frozen music." Keeping this powerful metaphor in mind, one could say that area residents find themselves in the midst of an ambitious, eclectic composition by Bloomington architect Arthur L. Pillsbury.
His career - with nearly 700 known buildings to his name - spanned the final years of the 19th century and ended with an untimely death in 1925. Although Pillsbury's body of work is concentrated in Bloomington-Normal and the surrounding area, he also designed plenty of buildings in far-flung downstate Illinois communities, such as Centralia and Tuscola.
