  • Jaime Haas remembers very well a visit he and his friends received in middle school. It was a representative from MacArthur High School that gave a presentation to students regarding Mac Arthur's Electrical Systems Technology Apprentice Program. Haas, now a senior at MacArthur is in his last high school year but in the final stage of the Electrical Systems Technology program he had heard about several years back. Recently, about 40 MacArthur students got the opportunity not only to practice their electrical skills, but also to help out the community. The students went to four Habitat for Humanity Homes on the Aragon street subdivision and wired both the wires and plugs for each of the homes under professional supervision.

  • This research explores the relationship between Native American newspapers and tribal sovereignty. By means of a content analysis of more than a thousand environmental stories in four tribal newspapers in Wisconsin, interviews with Native American journalists, and discussions with Indian focus groups, the study examines the themes and values tribal journalists and their readers attach to sovereignty. The research suggests that Native newspapers are an important source of information about sovereignty for Native Americans. It also finds that cultural values and themes that reinforce sovereignty emerge from Native news reports about the environment.
