• Battle Continues in Iowa Over Water Pollution; Political Opposition and Cost Concerns Have Kept the State From Complying with 1972 Federal Act

Iowa is one of the last states in the nation to protect rivers, lakes and streams as required by the 1972 federal Clean Water Act, and pollution opponents still are fighting for change. The Environmental Protection Commission ended eight years of debate in January by approving limits on water pollutants. The rules are aimed at bacteria, which can threaten the health of humans and animals, and ammonia, which harms fish and aquatic plants.

• State Reaches Landmark $7.35m Settlement for Chemical Spill

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the state Fish and Boat Commission announced today that they will be receiving one of the largest natural resources damage settlements in state history for a chemical spill last year in McKean County. Norfolk Southern Railway Company and Norfolk Southern Corp. will pay $7.35 million for a June 2006 derailment that spilled 42,000 gallons of lye into Big Fill Run, Sinnemahoning-Portage Creek and the Driftwood Branch of Sinnemahoning Creek. The spill killed fish and other aquatic life, as well as terrestrial plants and animals. It also polluted soils, sediments, surface water, groundwater and wetlands.

• 13 Hikes Included in Kanawha Forest Saturday Program

Thirteen guided hikes covering subjects ranging from Kanawha State Forest's coal mining history to nature photography, birds, wildflowers and mushrooms will be part of the annual Osbra Eye Memorial Nature Walks program on Saturday in Kanawha State Forest. In addition to several hikes dealing with spring wildflowers, there will be walks for both beginning and advanced birdwatchers as well as those interested in learning more about trees, medicinal plants and mushrooms. One hike will focus on catching and identifying aquatic animals in Davis Creek, while another will deal with general ecology and herpetology, and involve finding and identifying salamanders. A guided road tour of the park will be available for those unable to walk well.
