In actuality, the use of aprons extends to ancient times, when - according to Joyce Cheney, author of Aprons: Icons of the American Home - Cretan fertility goddesses and Assyrian priests wore ceremonial aprons, and Egyptian rulers donned jewel-encrusted styles. This past week I had the pleasure of browsing through and photographing about two dozen vintage aprons that belonged to my great-aunt. She had aprons of every size and type - long ones, medium ones, short ones, ones for everyday wear and ones for Sunday best and company. A complete apron wardrobe. Who has such a complete apron wardrobe today? A collection of aprons that extensive is a slice of Americana, and, I found, a huge source of nostalgia when I posted photos of the aprons on my Web site recently. My Great-Aunt Ruby's aprons were being prepared for a historical society display in Glenville this summer. The weeks preceding Christmas are not the easiest time of year for many of us. Our jobs seem more demanding, with lots of last- minute things to do before the holiday recess, while shopping for gifts consumes evenings and weekends. Nevertheless, I have always tried to find a little bit of time to create meaningful gifts for those colleagues, friends and family members who have made a difference in my life in the past year. This year I decided that aprons, each designed for a specific task (gardening, cooking or crafting), would be just the thing to make.
