WASHINGTON, April 20 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Hovnanian Enterprises Inc., a national residential homebuilder, has agreed today to pay a $1 million civil penalty to resolve alleged Clean Water Act violations at 591 construction sites in 18 states and the District of Columbia, the Justice Department and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced. As part of the settlement, Hovnanian will also implement a company-wide stormwater compliance program designed to improve compliance with storm water run-off requirements at existing and future construction sites around the country.
In yet another blow to the state's horse racing industry, the parent company of Rosecroft Raceway filed for bankruptcy Wednesday, a move the struggling company has been planning to take since the end of April. Cloverleaf Enterprises Inc., of Fort Washington, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maryland. The company did not give a reason for the filing, and calls to Cloverleaf were not returned late Wednesday.
Stewart Enterprises Inc. President and CEO Thomas Crawford announced today that he will retire in April. Thomas Kitchen, the company's senior executive vice president and chief financial officer will succeed Crawford. Crawford said he is leaving to serve as a mission president for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where he will preside over a group of about 600 young missionaries of the over the course of a three-year term beginning July 1. He added that continued differences with the chairman of the board over the day- to-day implementation of the Stewart's strategic plan, staffing levels and personnel contributed to his decision to leave.
