VIRGINIA BEACH - Frederick W. "Phred" Harrell, 65, died Dec. 24, 2006. Phred was born Jan. 29, 1941, in Roanoke, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents, John C. and Lillian Harrell and his brother, John W. Harrell. After graduating from Churchland High School in 1959 he entered into the Corps of Cadets at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI/Virginia Tech).
After leaving VPI/Virginia Tech, Phred entered the United States Naval Reserve as well as Norfolk Naval Shipyard apprenticeship in 1961 as a sheet metal apprentice. Shortly thereafter, he transferred to NOB as an electronics mechanic apprentice, where he finished his apprenticeship in 1965. VIRGINIA BEACH - Herbert E. Wittersheim, 89, passed away July 25, 2010 after battling many ailments during the last seven months. Born May 28, 1921 in Bellwood, Ill., he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Marion Julison Wittersheim; daughter, Joanne E. Wittersheim; son, Martin R. Wittersheim of Midlothian, Va.; and brothers, Arthur and Alfred Wittersheim.
He graduated from Proviso High School in Maywood, Ill., in 1939. He served as a machinist apprentice with Diesel Engineering & Manufacturing Co. (DEMCO) in Chicago. While serving his apprenticeship, Herb was awarded a mechanical engineering scholarship by DEMCO and attended Armour Institute (now Illinois Institute of Technology).
