While he was incarcerated, he got his GED and took various classes to prepare himself for a possible job opportunity upon his release. He was discharged two years ago and has been a model citizen since. He's tried everything to find work, but no one will hire him.
He has taken placement tests for apprentice jobs (and scored very well). It's always the same -- every company requires a background check, and once they see his record, he is not even given a chance.

I was acquainted with the Apprentice Preparedness Training (APT) program and I put feelers out about jobs," [Gus Dunbar] explained. "It happened to be right around Memorial Day last year, 2003. I figured I wasn't doing anything right now; it's something I was always interested in doing (working with my hands), building things and that sort. "So I signed up for this to see how it would work out for me.

Harry Jones retired after 36 years of service and held a variety of jobs from apprentice lineman to service planning technician. Doug Thompson worked for the cooperative for 33 years before retiring. He began working as a journeyman lineman and rose to the position of operations supervisor.
