They say every dog has his day, and I think it's safe to say that every foodie has the same. For months on whiningdining.com , we've featured national this and national that day, mostly through the kindness of blogger Jim Bay, who keeps up with these things. But last week I needed a real calendar. Not an online appointment calendar, but just something I can have at hand. I knew I was bound to have several in the stacks of promotional items that come to me, and I was right. One of them was from Gallo, and it includes all the regular holidays plus national food days.

Damone L. Brown is scheduled to report in August to his Mexican professional basketball team, but U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara on Tuesday added one more appointment to his calendar -- a Nov. 3 sentencing for concealing money laundering. The 32-year-old former National Basketball Association and Syracuse University player pleaded guilty before Arcara on Tuesday, admitting that he allowed a notorious cocaine-distribution gang to hide about $170,000 in his North Buffalo safe-deposit box, knowing that the cash had been illegally received.

Over the past five years, the Detroit Free Press has exposed overtime abuse by Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's police bodyguards, the mayor's excessive spending of city dollars and an extraordinary number of his family members and friends on the city payroll. Using a Michigan Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the city of Detroit, we showed what our sources had been telling us: that Kilpatrick had used millions in public tax dollars to silence the three former police officers who had sued him. In that busy period right before Christmas when everything around you is slowing down yet there aren't enough hours in the day or pages in the appointment calendar to cover all the things you need to accomplish, I met with UNM-Taos Executive Director Kate O'Neill to get her overall impression of the year rapidly coming to a close. On a day when the campus was closed due to snow and she was waiting for tire chains to be installed on her truck, she had just enough time for a quick cup of coffee and a summary of some of the major events that shaped the community college's progress in 2008.
