According to documents filed in Oklahoma City federal court Dec. 5, Francis E. McGovern, a professor of law and a specialist in alternative dispute resolution, has been named by the federal officials as the mediator in the Sardis fight.

  • AUGUSTA, Maine -- Having enough money to pay attorneys who defend poor Mainers is proving to be as difficult a task for the Indigent Legal Defense Commission as it was for the judiciary. Attorneys assigned to represent criminal defendants facing jail time and others entitled to court-appointed counsel will not be paid during the month of June because the commission will run out of money at the end of May, John Pelletier, executive director of the commission, said last week.

  • There's a new sheriff in town. Well, not exactly "new." Chief Deputy Don Vrotsos, 56, was appointed as the Dubuque County sheriff Monday by the County Board of Supervisors. With 36 years of law enforcement experience - 32 years in Dubuque County - Vrotsos beat out two other candidates from the Sheriff's Department, Sgt. Tom Reittinger and Capt. Greg Egan. The board unanimously selected Vrotsos as the 26th sheriff of Dubuque County, citing his experience and qualifications for the promotion. A graduate of the FBI National Academy, Vrotsos also was the only candidate with a college degree. He graduated from the University of Dubuque with a double major in psychology and sociology, with concentration in criminal justice.
